SITEKI – Rising crime and developmental challenges took center stage as Ward 1 stakeholders convened to map out urgent solutions during a consultative meeting at the Town Hall on Thursday, 11 September 2025, with the coordination of the Council’s Community and Social Development Management (CSDM) Office.

Rising Crime and Development Challenges

Community leaders, stakeholders and residents highlighted several pressing concerns, including:

  1. Theft of brass water meters.
  2. Illegal sale of dagga within town.
  3. Increased robbery and unlawful activity late at night, fueled by liquor outlets operating until late hours.

Solutions Proposed

To address these issues, stakeholders agreed on key strategies:

  1. Improved Safety Infrastructure: Installation of maximum street lighting throughout Ward 1.
  2. Environmental Management: Clearing of bushes around the bus rank and identified hotspots.
  3. Youth Empowerment: Introduction of job creation initiatives to provide opportunities and reduce youth vulnerability to crime.

Formation of Development Committee

Alongside crime prevention discussions, stakeholders successfully established a Ward 1 Development Committee, which will spearhead development priorities and act as a liaison between residents and council structures.

Leadership Call for Unity

Ward 1 Councillor, Mr. Buyisakuthula Matsenjwa, commended participants for their commitment, urging collective action:

“I would like to thank the stakeholders for their attendance and request that we form a pact to combat crime within Ward 1. Together, we can make our ward safer and more prosperous.”

Looking Ahead

The resolutions from the meeting will be tabled at the Stakeholders’ Forum on 15 September 2025, where outcomes from all wards will be consolidated for broader dialogue. The Council also extended its appreciation to residents for their active role in shaping strategies to ensure both development and safety in Siteki.
